The
local historical society in Osterfarnebo, Foreningen for hembygdsvard in
Osterfarnebo, was
established in
1918. It’s main purpose that time was to save the historical village
Koversta with buildings from the 18th century. As time went
on it also started with other acitivities to save the local heritage for
later generations. One of today's biggest events is arranging midsommer celebrations in
Koversta. Today it is a modern society with many members in Osterfarnebo
and all over
Sweden, not to mention in
other countries, i.e. USA, people deriving from the parish.
Chairman of the
society is Gunnel Stridh, g.strid@telia.com

Emigration from Osterfarnebo
In the 19th century many people from Osterfarnebo emigrated to
North America
. They had
difficulties with finding jobs and places to live with their families.
Some of them were adventurers and wanted to explore new possibilities
and new lands. The temptation
from the young, virgin countries in
Northern America
was difficult to
resist for the poor people. Johan Wideen, a
former member of the Local Historical Society, made a list of all inhabitants from the parish who emigrated
between 1850-1948. This list can be bought from the local historical
society to a cost of 4 Euro plus mailing cost. Please order the list
from info@koversta.com
You can also
order the beautiful book Torpboken (torp=small house),
with many photos from the different houses and villages in Osterfarnebo, a kind
of photo documentation. The book is in Swedish but as it consists of photos
this will not disturb you. It
costs 20 Euro plus mailing cost.
Throughout the years many descendants of Österfärnebo inhabitants
living in the USA
or in
Canada
have made journeys
to our parish to seek their roots. In
Koversta
Old
Heritage
Village
you can see what
life looked like in the 17th-18th century. If you
want to know about your ancestors in Osterfarnebo, please contact info@koversta.com
and we will try to help you with information and maybe find relatives who still
live in the parish.
